I only knew Mark Kauffman for a few years, but he was one of the most impressive people I have ever met. He was a soldier of impeccable fortitude. He & my husband, both U.S. Army retired, compared tall tales often. Mark had some incredibly tall tales but in the end, every one of them proved to be absolutely true and every stunning accomplishment was documentably his. He was a rock solid soldier from an era when you had to be extraordinarily tough to literally be all you could be. And he had to be tough to make it through the last few, frustrating years.

He was ahead of his time in thinking healthy. He expanded his nursing knowledge, studying herbs, natural cures, organic and non-GMO gardening. He loved to cook – never was a better meal had than at his grill. He dearly loved his dog Randy. And he loved to talk – he could literally go for hours nonstop, and you always came away amazed at what he had done and what he knew. He tackled his civilian career in RV repair full force, going back to school and doing things the right way. He was a perpetual information sponge and would inevitably know the answer to even the most obscure questions.

He could be loud and raucous, kind and sharing and astoundingly intelligent, efficient and kind. His military knowledge came from all parts of the world, facing all sorts of enemies and all sorts of situations in many theatres. And that in the end is what killed him. He is and will be sorely missed but will be remembered as a good friend.
