Merritt A. Smith, 97, of Allentown, PA., formerly of Kutztown, PA, passed away at Country Meadows of Allentown on September 13, 2022. He was the widower of Anna M. (Sittler) Smith, who passed away in 2015. Born in Lynnport, PA, he was the son of the late Paul and Florence E. (Oswald) Smith. He was a 1942 graduate of Hamburg High School and then went on to serve his country in the US Navy Air Corps. during WWII. He was employed as an airplane mechanic and inspector for Kutztown Aviation Service from 1947-1973. He later worked as a maintenance foreman for East Penn Manufacturing Co., in Lyon Station, PA, until retiring in 1993. Merritt was an active member of St. Paul’s UCC Church in Kutztown, PA, having served as a former Deacon and Elder. He was a member of the former Kutztown Jaycees, and the Kutztown Lions Club, being a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award. Survivors include his son, Kevin M. (Marta) Smith of Alburtis, PA; daughter, Sharon A. (Martin) Kozlowski of Kutztown, PA; sister, Evelyn Lichtenwalner of Allentown; three grandchildren, Tyler and Logan Smith, and Heather Lakey; three great-grandsons, Austin Grube, Ethan Lakey, and Dries Smith. He was predeceased by his sister, Grace Smith, and granddaughter, Jennifer Grube. His funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 10:30 AM in St. Paul’s UCC Church, 47 S. Whiteoak Street Kutztown, PA 19530, with a calling hour to begin at 9:30 AM. Interment following service in Jacob's Union Cemetery, New Tripoli, PA. Rev. Kim Kline Adamson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to his church sent to the church address above.
