Irene A. Yesick, 92, of Baton Rouge, LA, formerly of Slatington, PA, passed away in her residence on September 25, 2018.  She was born in Washington Township, PA, a daughter to the late Martin and Elizabeth (Melories) Yesick.  She was a Korean War U.S. Navy (Wave) Veteran, having served from 1949-1953.  She was a bowler and won the 9th Naval District Command championship.  She later discovered golf in 1954.  She was taught by former pro Al Michael at Webb Park in Baton Rouge, LA. Irene was later hired at Baton Rouge Municipal Golf Course in the golf department where she not only continued to develop her skills to the point where she dominated women’s golf in the area for a long time, but she was a much sought-after golf instructor there, as well. At 58, she opened the new Howell Park golf course in 1957 and served there for 18 years before moving to Webb Park until her retirement four years later. After retirement, in 1964, Irene was able to regain amateur status and in 1965 started playing in tournaments.  In the first year she won 18 out of 24 tournaments.  She won the city championship in 1966, 67, 68, and in 1970.  She won almost every women’s title in her area including championships of Webb Park, Howell Park, Baton Rouge Country Club, Sherwood Forest Country Club, Briarwood, Gonzales and Riverdale golf clubs, and many others. Irene was of the Roman Catholic faith.  Survivors include sister-in-law Ethel Yezik and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her siblings Martha Soper, Mary Krause, and Paul, Steve, Martin, Joe, Thomas, and Helen Yesik. Irene’s graveside service with Military Honors will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 10:00 AM at the Slatedale Cemetery, Brown Street Slatedale, PA 18080.  Rev Scott L. Shay will officiate.
